Natural Pet Stain Remover

Our dog, Maverick, is good in the house *most* of the time.  The thing is, if he needs to go and we aren't around, he'll just find a place and go.  So while we were all in bed last night he  made his way up to Ayden's playroom and went #1 AND #2.  I'll spare you a before picture but I suppose he thinks the grass on Ayden's transportation rug will do in a pinch.  UGH.

We have some Resolve Pet Stain carpet cleaner in our cleaning supplies but I haven't used it in a LONG time (perhaps since we lived at our old house...) and these days I like to check EWG (Environmental Working Group) for ratings before using a conventional cleaning product.  As usual, I am so glad I did!

It rates an F for ALL KINDS of reasons...

After doing some Googling, I found a pet stain cleaning method that I was comfortable with.  Here are the steps:

First, liberally sprinkle baking soda over the spots.

Wait about 5 minutes then vacuum it all up.
This breaks down any staining and neutralizes odors.
It also soaks up moisture.
Spray the spots with a solution of the following ingredients:

1 part water, 1 part vinegar, and several drops of lemon essential oils.
Lemon essential oils are antimicrobial and bactericidal. Perfect added protection for pet messes!
(You can add baking soda directly to the solution but I chose to use it firs.t)

Blot up  the solution and scrub any spots with a rag, brush or sponge and admire your carpet!
Ours was good as new!  I was so impressed with how well this worked.

There wasn't even a wet spot or stain on the back!
Product by product we are getting closer to having a toxic free home and it feels good knowing that our children (and ourselves) will have such a clean place to eat, play, breathe and LIVE!  With an arsenal of vinegar, baking soda, water, dish soap, coconut oil, lemon juice, essential oils and sunshine you really can clean and disinfect your entire home without harsh chemicals.  Breathe easy my friends!

What is your favorite non-toxic carpet cleaning method?  Have you ever tried this one?

  1. I also have a Norwex cloth that is some sort of "magic" cloth with antimicrobial properties. We have 2 cats who like to leave us messes on the carpet often. Once I clean off the mess, all I have to do is scrub the spot with the wet Norwex cloth and its good as new. Crazy! Again, no harsh chemicals needed :)
