Let's Pretend!

Ayden has been pretending to talk on the phone for a while now, will pretend to nibble a picture of food and will do what he sees us doing a lot but he has never really pretended... Until today!  We went to David's parents' house to watch a football game. David's mom keeps a plastic bin of toy cooking/dining ware that Ayden has never played with before. We got it out while we were there and, since it doesn't have play food with it, we cooked and ate "pretend" food. It was the first time we have pretended with nothing but our imaginations. At first Ayden looked at our "chicken," "water," and "soup" like we were crazy. Then something clicked. Before we knew it he was cooking and eating up a storm, serving us more chicken and even some applesauce (a course he added on his own).

At one point he knocked over a cup and when I said, "Oh no!  We spilled the water!" He looked genuinely concerned and did not see anything funny about it. So I suppose he has plenty of room to grow in imagination land. We can't wait to see what adventures we have in store since it is only the beginning.

Pretending is a pretty big concept to grasp and it takes time for their little brains to sort what is real and what is not, when to pretend and when to be real, etc. It takes practice just like anything else in early stages and we are more than happy to help Ayden out!

When did your little one start pretending?
