Chestnuts Roasting

The farmer's market is beginning to dwindle down for the Winter season. There are plenty of squash and greens to go around, a little bit of broccoli and things like radishes but not too much else. We did find a special treat at one of the tents.

A couple of my favorite Christmas songs talks about "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire" and hearing "the chestnuts pop! Pop, pop, pop" but I had never actually had any until now!

We did not roast them over an open fire, which I would still love to do next time we have a wood burning fireplace and some chestnuts all in one place; but we did roast them in the oven.

Score the skin with the tip of a knife
(to avoid that "pop, pop, pop" the song refers to all over your oven)
Heat your oven to 425* F

Roast for anywhere between 20 and 40 minutes
(depending on how roasted you want them, when you will peel, etc.)

Snuggle up with a good movie and peel away.

They were delicious!  They were warm and a little chewy, not crunchy like most nuts.. They did continue to cook in their shells as we ate them so by the end some of them were too hard to eat. I'm not sure if the better solution would be to roast them for a shorter amount of time (closer to 15 or 20 minutes) or to go ahead and peel them all before you eat them. I think I'll try the shorter roasting time next time because I enjoyed peeling as I ate.

Have you ever roasted chestnuts? I think they will become a snack we have at least once every fall/winter.

  1. They are an extremely common street food in Switzerland, where we used to live, all winter long. The chestnut vendors replace the ice cream vendors in the fall. To me, the texture seems so starchy, it's almost like a baked potato.

    1. So neat that you can get them from vendors on the street! We don't have those where we live but I have eaten from them in NYC (though I probably shouldn't have as they are don't have the best reputation for cleanliness ;)

    1. I am so sorry I have made you feel that way. I was just telling David a day or two ago that I would like to be better about responding to comments. You take time out of your day to read and even more time to comment and I really would love to get in the habit of responding. That being said, I typically do try to answer questions so I am sorry that I have somehow missed yours. If you are still interested, you can email me at lifewiththeladniers@gmail.com and let me know again what recipes and advice you needed. Email is a quick way to communicate with me. I wish Blogger would make it so I could manage my comments through my phone as I rarely sit down at my computer. I use the Blogger App to write all of my posts and upload pictures straight from my phone. It is the only way I have been able to put up a post a day for almost 2 years now. If I had to wait for time to sit down at my computer to do it I'd hardly ever post (or sleep)! I hope you will continue to read and thank you for the kick in the pants that I needed as far as responding goes. I can't promise I will be able to do it all the time but I will promise that I will try to do it more.
