Chemical Free Weed Killer

Here at the cottage, we have a beautiful brick patio.  Only, when we moved in, we had no idea just how beautiful (or big!) it was because almost every crack was filled in with grass and weeds.

My mom finds weeding therapeutic so she volunteered some of her time and made some great progress.  I told her I'd finish it and then a couple of weeks passed without a single weed getting pulled.  David decided to take care of it for me and weed eated (weed ate?) down in the cracks.  I walked outside and was pleasantly SHOCKED at how awesome the patio looked without all of those weeds!  What made it even better is that I didn't have to finish the weeding because, unlike my mother, I do not find weeding therapeutic... Quite frankly, I find it a bit annoying.  The only problem with David's method is that it was like a bandaid to the problem. All of the roots were still in tact and with all the rain we are getting this year, the weeds will be back in no time!  Our land lord suggested that we just spray Round Up or other weed killer on it but we just can't bring ourselves to do it.  Ayden and our pets play out there, we eat at a table there and we just don't like the idea of having chemicals around us all the time.  That's when I remembered that I had written down a recipe for a chemical free weed killer somewhere along the line.  I do not remember where this specific recipe came from but I have seen some like it on Pinterest and have had Facebook friends talk about using something similar and it working very well.  I thought I'd make up a batch and put it to the test.

Here are the ingredients:

It is probably best to spray on the morning of a sunny day but it will work without the suns help too.

I'll do a follow up post with before and after pictures but I will say that I tested it on a small patch of the sidewalk (on a cloudy afternoon) and just a few hours later the weed were shriveled up.  The next day they were dry as could be and were easily swept away with a broom.  I think this is going to be a great solution for us!!

  1. I have found that regular salt water works well too! We used it to kill the grass and weeds along the bottom of our chain link fence. :)
